Sankhu Palubari Community School, Kathmandu

To provide education for the deprived, socially excluded and poor children in a nearby village of Kathmandu metropolitan city named Sankhu, Sankhu Palubari Community School was started in the year 1999/2000. Though Sankhu is near to Kathmandu, the poor living condition and low level of educational status of the villagers’ was the main reason of the establishment of the community school. It has been providing free education to the needy children from six to fifteen years of age. Classes run from Kindergarten through Eighth grade. The students are getting free education including stationery, uniform and one time meal.

After completing grade eight in Sankhu School the students are being sent to a local boarding school (Evergreen Boarding School) to complete their secondary level education. In the school year there were 16 students studying in Evergreen School eight students in grade nine and eight students in grade ten. They are getting support for school fee, uniform and transportation.

In Sankhu Palubari School there are nine full time teachers, one part time music teacher, a cook, and a school helper is working at present. The school is running with the financial support of the Advocates of Human Rights, USA, a non-governmental and non-profit organization dedicated to promotion and protection of Human Rights throughout the world. The school is managed by Hoste Hainse and the school committee which comprises of teachers, parents and local people.

For capacity development and enhancement of the students, various extra curricular activities are organized in the school likewise the health programs are organized for the students’ healthy condition.

Organic Farming (OF) Project

The Organic Farming Project in Sankhu was awarded by National Develoment Marketplace (NDM) to Hoste Hainse on 24th June 2008. The name of the project is “Going Organic! From School to Home”. The project duration is from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009 and the awarded amount is Nrs. 1,500,000.

The project executed at Sankhu Palubari addresses various issues that affect economic status, community sustainability and important environmental issues of the target community.

Various activities have been carried out under this project. Brief description of activities are as follows;:

  • A separate Bank account has been opened for the project.

  • An office has been established in Sankhu Palubari. A project staff will be on hand during the office hour to answer questions and disseminate information. The office is opened for three hours a day, two days a week

  • Ten Ropanies of land were donated to the project by Sankhu Palubari Community Cooperative member Mr. Krishna Raj Subedi to be used for the Community Organic Farm and Training Centre.

  • Project support staff from the Palubari community has been appointed. Training and awareness programs have been carried out.

  • Thirteen organic groups have been formed in Palubari and Bishambhara villages.

  • Correspondence has been made with local offices such as Kathmandu District Agricultural Office, Kathmandu District Livestock Office, Kathmandu District Development Office and Suntole Village Development Committee Office to inform them of the implementation of the project in the village.

  • In cooperation with the Kathmandu Agricultural District Office two hoarding boards have been prepared, which lists the seasonal vegetables for growing organic products in the villages.

  • A manure pit has been dug for the production of compost manure and this produced manure will be used in the training centre of the organic farm.

  • A building 200 meters from the Community Farm and Training Centre has been established for the project as the Community Resource and Information Centre-(CRIC). The center has been sustainably remodeled to house an informational center and office for project staff, a training room and informal educational classroom for use of the community, and sleeping quarters for up to six world volunteers who will offer their service and expertise to the project through Four Paths Foundation. Currently four volunteers live at the center.

  • A volunteer program has been established to welcome volunteers from around the world to participate in the organic project through project partner organization The Four Paths Foundation.

  • Sankhu Palubari Cooperative Limited, is providing micro-loan to needy farmers for organic farming at a very low interest rate and has also developed a format for loan transaction.

  • Different varieties of vegetable seeds have been sown in the plastic tunnel at training centre. And various necessary instruments like pump set, spray pump has been purchased.

  • An organic club has been formed in Sankhu Palubari Community School with the purpose of teaching students about the advantages of organic farming. SPCS students and their teachers visit the training centre on a weekly basis. Organic groups have also been formed.

  • PAF team members have visited the project site for monitoring and evaluation of the project and after observation few suggestions has been made.

"Education Motivation Program"

Hoste Hainsehas started a new project "Education Motivation Program". in collaboration "Majhi Musar Bote Kalyan Sewa Samiti" (MMBKSS) from Baishak 2067 (April 2010). MMBKSS is an Indeginious People’s Organization working for the upliftmen of Majhi, Musar, Bote marginalized ethnic group. The project is financially supported by Interhands Foundation Norway.


The new project aims to provide support that motivates children and community to continue their education in school. As government education is free the project will encourage the students and families to continue their education through assistance in school home work, awareness programs in human rights, health and sanitation etc. Once we succeed to motivate a group of children, year by year more children will continue their education
